Our Company Story
Hello, My name is Robert Durkin, the owner and President of VIP Auto Spa. I live in Reno with my wife and four daughters.
When I look back, I can see how my life has been a natural progression towards owning and running my own auto detailing business. I have loved cars all my life, and as a kid, one of my greatest ambitions was owning an immense car collection (yet to happen!) I remember visiting my grandfather as a young boy where I would spend the whole day helping him pull off the ultimate shine on his car with Turtlewax and the old school giant rotary polisher. He had the most beautiful 1969 Mustang Fastback Coupe that he faithfully kept in superb condition.
I also often spent time at my father’s dental lab. That’s where I came into contact with ‘ceramics’ for the first time and often experimented around with it. But the life-changing moment came when I jokingly ceramic coated my brand new pair of Oakley Iridium sunglasses. A few months later, I came across them lying next to my brother’s (he had gotten a similar pair around the same time). I was shocked. Unlike his that had started to fade, mine still looked brand new! Ceramic coating was definitely something special and it’s captivated me since then.
Years later, when I went to college, my first job was working for a detailing & customs shop in Monterey Bay, California. One of our yearly projects was preparing about 100 cars for the world-famous ‘Concourse de Elegance’ car show at Pebble Beach. As you probably already know, this is a car show like no other and the expectations for perfection are extremely high. We would often spend grueling hours working to restore those cars back to their prime state, only for the dread bay fog to creep in the morning of the show. And with it came a whole slew of problems for the cars. But one important lesson I learned from all this is that “Every car owner has a problem that needs to be solved. And with the right combination of skills, products, and know-how, any car can be made to look incredible.”
Fast forward to 2018, and I came across an email saying that VIP Detailing in Reno was up for sale. It was the absolute worst possible time because I was just finishing my last semester of college. But something felt right and I knew it was time to act. And my wife (who’s also my business partner) thought it was a good investment to make. Soon after, we started negotiating with the seller, and a couple of months later, we signed off on the deal just a few days before Christmas. Now I owned a detailing company!
But from the onset, one thing was clear. we had to bring a ceramic coating product to the Reno market. I did a lot of research that finally led me to a ceramic coating company called Ceramic Pro. From the second I walked into the Ceramic Pro headquarters in Carlsbad, CA, I knew I had found my new partners. What followed was an in-depth training course on Ceramic Pro products and I was back in Reno with my first batch of Ceramic Pro 9H. Since then, I have not looked back. I often warn my clients, “once you ceramic coat anything for the first time, you will forever ceramic coat every car, truck boat, RV you own thereafter for the rest of your life.” Ceramic Pro is really that good! I could not be happier representing the Ceramic Pro brand and growing our company to greater heights.
